GET YOUR CRAFT ON: Mermaid Halloween Costume

Mermaid Crown

Mermaid Crown

Hey Guys!  As usual I waited until the last minute to finish my Halloween costume this year.  Thought I would post this free tutorial/pdf of the mermaid crown I made in case anyone else is scrambling to pull something together!  Or maybe you can have it as a head start for next year...  Just click on the illustration below and it will give you a larger version that you can print out with instructions.

To complete the mermaid look I would suggest a fish tail skirt and some seashell jewelry.  The skirt I am wearing was a plain blue one I bought at the Goodwill for around $4.  Then my friend and I cut the bottom into a fish tail shape and hot glued sparkly fabric scales all over it.  I was able to find some seashells already strung into necklaces at Michael's for a pretty good deal too.  Now just put some glittery makeup on your face and you are all set!

Happy Halloween,
Genevieve :)

New Loves...

Anthro does it again!  Look at the texture on these beautiful sweaters!  *sigh*

I'm also lovin' music by Joy Williams, especially Songs from This - EP.  Couldn't find any songs from that album available for my blog player, so here is one from Songs fron That- EP (which is still really really good too).  Doesn't she have the prettiest voice?

Now Featured on Delightful Blogs

My blog is now listed in the D.I.Y + Crafting section of Delightful Blogs!  Here is an exerpt from their website and what they are about: was launched in June of 2006 to share the wonderful blogs we like to read. Most blog directories or search engines have so many blogs listed that it gets a bit overwhelming to find a new favorite beyond the top 10 or so. We search for blogs that are written (or feature photos or videos) with a unique point of view

If you have a moment I would really appreciate it if you could rate my blog here.  Thank you and hope you guys are having a great week!

Custom Jewelry Sets Made from Wedding Invitations

Jewelry Set Made Out of a Wedding Invitaion

Jewelry Set Made Out of a Wedding Invitaion

Jewelry Set Made Out of a Wedding Invitaion

One of my old high school buddies is getting married tonight, should be a lot of fun!  When the invitation first came in the mail I thought it was one of the coolest I had ever seen- pretty colors in a fresh modern design.  She loves jewelry so I thought a unique gift would be to make her a couple little pieces out of her invitation.  Hope she likes it- thought it would be a nice keepsake to remind her of her special day!

Anyway, when I was making this set I thought it might be fun to offer this service on my Etsy site as well.  I know there are a lot of people out there looking for unique wedding gifts and this would be perfect for any bride-to-be!  Or if you are already married but want a special memento of your wedding day then this would be great too.  I am offering earrings and necklaces as sets, but if you are interested in switching out the earrings for a ring I can do that as well.  Patterned papers work really well, but solids or asymmetrical designs can be used too.  Please allow 2 weeks from the time I receive the invitation to the time the finished pieces arrive at your door.  If you are in a crunch for time let me know and I will see what my schedule permits.

Ok, off to get ready and put on my dancin' shoes!

Flower Bucket Hitting the Shelves!

The weirdest thing happened this week.  I decided to stop by my local quilt shop since I hadn't been by in a couple months, and when I walked in they just happened to be unpacking bolts of Flower Bucket!  So cool.  It's one thing to see strike offs, but it's a totally different thing to see bolts of it in an actual store!  BIG thank yous to Debora and Deb at Dragonfly and to everyone else who will be carrying my new line!

For all of you online shop owners that will be carrying Flower Bucket here are some photos if you are in need of promo images.  I also created a Flikr group so once the fabric starts rolling in and you guys start sewing and crafting with it I would love to see what you come up with!

And last but not least if you need some ideas to get you going, here is the free Loves Me Loves Me Not quilt pattern that Jean Ann Wright and I designed back in March to show the customers at Spring Market what they could make with my fabrics.  Windham offers free quilt patterns online to go with all of their collections so check them out! Oh, and the Bird's Nest Boxes shown above have a tutorial here.  I took some before/afters of the chair I just redid too so hope to have instructions on that soon...

Boutique Cafe Interview

Interview for Boutique Cafe

If you are interested in seeing fabric designer interviews from the Houston Quilt Market then check out Boutique Cafe.  The talented Bari J did a wonderful job guest hosting, and you can see my interview here.  I can now see why when I travel outside of the South everyone asks me where I'm from with that accent!  It's so weird to hear yourself talk!  But it was a lot of fun showing off the new line and being a part of the segment...

And props again to Simone for sewing the hat, clutch, and pincushion for the booth.  They looked fantastic!

Fabric Flower Necklace

As you can see the ole' blog got a facelift over the weekend!  I spent all night figuring out how to do a 3 column layout but then it looked way too busy so I reverted back to the trusty 2.  Added some lace and button details from my recent shopping excursion and overall I'm really happy with how it turned out.  Just remind me to never try and figure out HTML code again- there is a reason I'm not a web designer!  But for those of you looking for blog code tips I found this site to be really helpful...

I also updated my Etsy shop with some new flower necklaces so head on over and check them out!  They are super lightweight and a lot of fun to wear.  I love throwing one on with a simple t-shirt and jeans for an everyday look, but they can also be worn with dressy outfits as well (think upcoming holiday parties, etc.)!

P.S.- and yes, that's my "Flower Bucket" collection in the background! It will be shipping to stores any day now- woot woot!

Quilt Market Houston 2009: Part 1

Quilt Market Houston Fall 2009

Quilt Market Houston Fall 2009

Quilt Market Houston Fall 2009

Quilt Market Houston Fall 2009
Well my trip to Houston for the 2009 Fall Quilt Market started off a little shaky. Literally. The flight from Atlanta to Houston was intense- I've never been on a flight where the turbulence was so bad that people were screaming at the top of their lungs and clutching on to one another for dear life... and anyone that knows me knows that I hate to fly anyway so that was not my favorite way to start things off... but once I had my boots on solid ground and headed to Market things instantly began to turn around for the better...

For starters, the Windham booth looked absolutely fantastic! They made it look like an old schoolhouse and the super cute setup earned a shiny red ribbon (that's Laura up there holding the 2nd place prize). Each fabric collection got it's own little section on the wall, and they had found this awesome antique yellow cart to display with my Gypsy wares. They also asked each designer to make a quilt block out of their fabrics and hung them on these large fabric chalkboards. I went with the bird theme for my block and used metallic thread details as I'm all about shiny things these days. I'm even thinking about doing an entire quilt out of these bird blocks now that I have the quilting bug.

It was also nice to catch up with the Windham designers that I hadn't seen since the Spring and meet some new ones as well (like Anna Griffin- how cool- always admired her work!). Wish I would have taken more pictures but the whole weekend went by way too fast! A HUGE thank you to all who stopped by and to those who ordered Gypsy Garden! Tomorrow I will post some details of the items I made for the booth...

Gypsy Garden: The Entire Collection

Gypsy Garden Gold Colorway

Gypsy Garden Blue Colorway

Just a quick drop in to show the Gypsy Garden collection as a whole since I've only been showing sneak peeks like this , this, and this.  Wish I could upload larger pics but everytime I try it resizes them small again.  Whatev, Technology.  The designs are grouped into "Gold" and "Blue" colorways.  Shop owners can order now through Windham Fabrics and the collection will be available to the public Spring 2010.

Hope to see some of you shop owners this weekend at Quilt Market! Come on by booth #900 and say hello!

Quilt Market is rapidly approaching and will be in full swing by the end of the week.  I can't believe it's that time again and can't wait to head to Texas to show off my new Gypsy Garden line!  It makes me even more excited to have samples for the Windham booth that are this friggin' cute!  The lovely Simone of Gardenhouse Boutique whipped these lil' ditties up and I couldn't be more pleased.  Simone just has that natural flair for putting things together and always amazes me with her creations.  Not to mention she is a really cool chick.  And she loves Tim Gunn and Rachael Zoe.  And she let me bribe her with jewelry to make some of this stuff.  So head on over and check out her blog too.  She has some new patterns coming down the pipeline very soon so keep an eye on this gal...

Now for the giveaway winner... I know I promised to announce it last week (sorry!), but yeah, just didn't happen with all the craziness going on...  I texted the Random Brian Generator to pick a number between 1 and 42 and he texted back #34, so CONGRATS barefootmama, you win!  Email me your addy and I will get your prize shipped out next week.  Thanks to everyone who played along- I really enjoyed hearing all of your goals for this upcoming year and hope they all come true for you!
