Totally Bummed

Man, I can't believe this, just read on decor8 that Domino Mag is going under!  That was one of my favorite magazines of all time and my Mother-In-Law just bought me a year subscription for Christmas!  Another one bites the dust...

Bianco Carrara Bathroom

Since leaving my Art Director job a few months ago I have started designing kitchens, baths, and other rooms using tile.  It's actually a little bit similar to what I was doing when I was designing gift products- I am still dealing with color, texture, scale etc. but just in a different way.

I recently had the pleasure of working with an awesome client, Madge, and here is how her bathroom turned out!  Above you can see the final pictures along with some of my preliminary sketches.  We used a combination of 4x4 Bianco Carrara marble, 12x12 Bianco Carrara marble, Bianco Carrara marble pencil liners, 3x6 white subway tile, 4x4 white square tile, and bands of multi marble penny rounds.  For the blue wall color Madge took a Tiffany's jewelry box and had the paint store match it.  How cool is that?  I think taking a classic look and adding a modern twist made this bathroom so much fun!

If anyone lives in Athens, Atlanta, or surrounding areas and wants to update your kitchen or bathroom let me know!

GET YOUR CRAFT ON: Fabric Wall Art

So here is a project for the budget-conscious, time-crunched gal like me.  I have been wanting some new artwork for my living room, so I got a great deal on some damask fabric for $5/yd at my local Hancock Fabrics and also ordered some great Paula Prass fabric from laniejane on etsy.  Aren't they great?  That is one of my dreams, to one day design my own kick butt fabric collection...but I digress...on to make some wall art!

Here are the supplies you will need:
Wooden Stretchers (can be found at your local art supply store)
Fun Fabric
Staple Gun
Brown Acrylic Paint (Optional)
Paintbrush (Optional)

Step 1:
Decide what size you would like your artwork to be and purchase wooden stretchers to create that size.  I used a combination of 24", 36", 40", and 48" stretchers.
Step 2:
Fit the stretchers together to form an open frame
Step 3:
Lay your fabric face down and lay your stretcher frame on top.  Trim around frame so you have just enough of fabric edge to wrap around the frame (probably a few inches all the way around).
Step 4:
Now here is where it gets a little tricky...Pull your fabric up around one side of the frame and place one staple in the middle of the stretcher.  The natural thought would be to start at one point and go continuously around the frame from there, but it is actually best to place one staple on all four sides first.  Then work your way from the center staples to the outside of the frame with a few staples on each side, alternating sides until you are at the end.  Be sure to pull the fabric as tight as you can as you place your staples and this will eliminate any slack in the final product.
Step 5:
When you get to the ends you will need to fold the corners.  I wish I had a good trick for this but I don't- I just play with it until I get a good clean looking corner and add a few extra staples to secure it.
Step 6:
If you have a lot of extra fabric hanging over the back of your frame you might want to trim it down.  Just be careful not to get too close to the staples as the fabric could eventually tear through.
Step 7:
This step is totally optional, but it's my favorite part!  If you would like a more "rustic" edge, or need a way to tie different fabric panels together you can add brown acrylic paint to the edges of the frame.  I use a dry brush technique that you can see here.

So that's it, a quick and easy way to spruce up a room!

Dreaming of Warm Weather...

Man it's cold here!  I'm in Georgia so I probably shouldn't be complaining.  I'm sure it is much worse in other parts of the US, but I am just a big baby when it comes to cold weather!  So I will just close my eyes, put on some tunes, and pretend I'm in the Bahamas since that is where I wish I was right now!  Here are some pics I took during our vacation there last year.  It was such a great trip and I hope to go back again one day...
Until then, here's part of my Old School Warm Weather Playlist that I will be listening to:

Twice as Nice

Hope everyone had a great weekend!  I was busy painting my laundry room (pictures coming soon) and working on some new jewelry.  I'm lovin' the way that this new copper ball necklace looks layered with some of my other pieces.  You can totally change up the look by adding another necklace into the mix!  Find them here at my etsy shop :)

Make Your Own Jewelry Sets

Introducing some new "sets" into my etsy shop!  I've had several requests to do more earrings/necklace combinations so hopefully these will fit the bill!  I chose to list them as separate items so you can make your own combos or purchase a single piece.  I'm not too much of a matchy-matchy person when it comes to my jewelry so I tried to come up with a couple of things that fit together nicely without being the exact same.  My new favorites are the Large Daisy Earrings with the Be Free Bird Necklace in the center picture.  I also made smaller versions of the earrings for those who like to wear dainty jewelry.  Hope you like 'em!

One Month From Tomorrow...

One month from tomorrow it will be Valentine's Day, can you believe it?!  Here are some lil' lovelies I added to my etsy shop tonight.  They are quite worn/vintage looking so if you like pieces with character then these would be right up your alley!  Brian doesn't understand why I have to make everything I create look so "tore up" but I just like things that way... Hey, and at $10 a pop these things are a steal!

UPDATE 1/14/08:  Two rings have now been reserved so there is one left!  The "XO" ring is now the only one available.

Happy Birthday Buster!

My little Buster Brown is 4 years old this month!  I don't have kids yet so you will have to endure pictures of our dogs for now- ha ha.  Buster is a Cockapoo which means he is part Cocker Spaniel and part Poodle, but he looks like he is part Muppet and part Old Man.  I'm thinking about getting him a hat for his birthday.  Maybe a scarf.  I'm totally opposed to dressing up animals head to toe in people outfits, but hats and scarves are a little different, right?  Not to mention these creations by BeanTownHandmade are the cutest things I have ever seen!  Their photography is great too.  What a personality that little dog Bean has!

And the Winner Is...

Congrats to Bess!  The Chipmunks Sing the Beatles is one of the craziest things I've ever heard of!  It's the perfect mix of good (Beatles songs) and bad (those songs being sung in chipmunk voices).  Thanks so much to everyone who played along and posted their first cds/tapes/8 tracks- that was a lot of fun!  And thanks again to Nicole for starting the 6 Random Things post :)

Bess, please email me your addy and which ring you would like and I will send it out to you next week!

Have a great weekend everybody!
Genevieve :)

Don't forget, the contest to win a ring ends tomorrow at noon EST!  There have been some funny comments so far, so keep 'em coming!  The winner will get to pick from one of the rings above (I make all of my rings adjustable so they will fit any size!)

6 Random Things (and a Prize at the End)

I've been tagged by the awesome jewelry maker, Nicole of LillyElla, to share 6 random things about myself so here it goes...

1.  I absolutely HATE for my food to touch.  Maybe I should get some cute plates like this to solve my mental problems...

2.  I wore cowboy boots to my wedding.  Sure my mom wasn't a fan at first, but she ended up liking the idea towards the end and at least I didn't trip down the aisle in any "fancy" weddings shoes! (Which for anyone who knows me it totally would have happened if I had worn heels that day!)

3.  Speaking of weddings, I ended up getting the flu for my entire honeymoon!  The last night we were there I was finally feeling better, so my husband and I went out for a nice lobster dinner since I hadn't been able to eat all week.  Turns out I'm allergic to lobster, so the entire 2nd week of my marriage consisted of hives and having to take steroids.  Nice.

4.  I used to live half of my life in China.  Not really, but I did have to travel there multiple times a year during my last job as an Art Director.  It's an interesting place for sure, but the 24+ hour plane rides to get there were awful!

5.  I'm right handed but left footed.  That is, back in my high school soccer days when I could kick a mean left-cross ;).  Not so much anymore...

6.  Ok, I probably shouldn't admit to this one, but the first cd (or was it a tape??? probably a tape back then...) I remember buying with my own money was New Kids On the Block Funky Funky Christmas.  Wow, did I really just tell the whole world that?!  At least my music taste has improved since then (or at least I'd like to think so!)...

Ok, so now I'm supposed to tag 6 people but I really can't think of 6 to ask at this moment (my brain hurts after coming up with my own random facts), so how about an open call to comment on this post about your first embarrassing (or maybe not so embarrassing) tape or cd purchase!  Then I won't feel so bad about mine- ha ha.  The worse the better!  Or maybe you have always been a cool chick and had good music taste :).  And why not make things interesting???  Let's say my favorite comment gets a free ring from yours truly...  You've got 'till this Friday at noon EST to post...   Yay for free stuff!
